Regarding Iniquity
I trudged to the tomb of my past sin
To mourn the foul deeds laid within
And all the weight I had long carried
But was that burden really buried?
A frowning angel standing guard
Blocked my way with a flaming sword
Shaking his wings he sternly said
Go away from this place of the dead
I cried, I wish it could be changed
That my past might be rearranged
I should have been a better man
But poor conduct spoiled my plan
The angel said, that’s a fantasy
You covet what can never be!
Why will you wallow in your faults
And change into a pillar of salt?
Your spotty record wounds your pride
With feet of clay you are mortified
But would you forsake all you have gained?
Wisdom, meekness and mercy obtained?
You touched the flames and you were burned
But out of the blaze guidance emerged
When tempted by fire, think on the pain
That with God’s grace you might abstain
On hearing this I fell to my knees
And prayed, Oh God, mold me as you please
I repent my foolish pondering
Help my mind to cease from wandering
I’m sure the Lord knows his own plan
He has my sojourn well in hand
So casting away my thorny doubts
I rejoice my sins are blotted out!
